first of all, don't take my remarks personally.
you are angry because I used the term "poor" ? do you prefer "limited" ?
let's say that duplicating information from one Form to another one is not a solution. (cf. database normalization principles, they are there for more than 3 decades : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Database_normalization).
what do you suggest next for renaming the name of a department ? coding agents to update those information ?
that's the problem, we mimic the relational capabilities pro programmatically (on a non relational infrastructure)
I repeat again my "useless pedantry" remark : "ALL applications have a relational part" but maybe the misunderstanding comes from the fact that we are not talking about the same thing.
all applications have a relational part, not repositories.
The mail is a repository. it needs security, replication and offline services.
Domino offers the repository services (very good) for years.
I also don't deny the fact that Domino has been very successful in collaboration for 2 decades but it is not sufficient for few years. (as Lotus 123 was very successful for years)
companies have more and more applications (and needs) and they also want more and more integration.
just an example : imagine a company adopting Domino 12 years ago.
they start using it for messaging / directory : great
as document repository : great.
for publishing news and information on an Intranet : very good
they need a little incident database : ok let's use the same platform
later they need an eCommerce site : they have to move to another platform (php, tomcat.... whatever) as the catalog of products needs relational capabilities
later they need to expand the incident database and integrate it with the eCommerce solution : they migrate it also to php
this is a typical evolution of what we see in companies.
why do they have to move to another platform ?
because Domino is unable to provide the minimum set of services needed to create simple applications.
DB2NSF was a good solution for expanding the Domino capabilities in theses areas.
